2025 ERB Workshops

Our comprehensive ten-week ERB Workshop prepares fifth-grade students for the CTP 5 (Comprehensive Testing Program) exams administered by private and independent schools to assess yearly scholastic growth.

What is the ERB/CTP 5?

The CTP 5 assesses student growth and performance through a series of separate content area exams. This data provides a snapshot of how a student and overall group is performing in Grade 5 academic subject areas.

The CTP is a rigorous exam. Many parents find that the conceptual and quantitative reasoning addressed in the exam is quite different from the classroom curriculum.

In 2018, the CTP 4 became the CTP 5, expanding the depth of knowledge and complexity of texts found on the exam.

The ERB is scored using percentiles translated into stanines, 1-9. Student scores are compared to several different groups, including both school-wide and national categories.

“The Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP) is a rigorous assessment for students in Grades 1-11 covering reading, listening, vocabulary, writing, mathematics, and science. Verbal and quantitative reasoning subtests are part of the CTP beginning in Grade 3. The CTP helps educators assess content specific, curriculum-based performance alongside reasoning ability and conceptual knowledge.”

ERB and Middle School Admissions

Historically, private and independent middle school admissions have included a required standardized exam called the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE), developed by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). In 2020, a huge shift in exam requirements changed the weight and importance of the Grade 5 ERB exams in the admissions process. Most upper-level schools now consider the ISEE Exam optional or not a component of the middle and high school application process.
